Prof. Sahib Singhਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਉਹ) ਕੁੰਡਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮਸਤ ਹਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁੰਡੇ ਹੇਠ ਰੱਖੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਮੈਗਲੁ = ਹਾਥੀ। ਦੀਜੈ = ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਲਿ ਕੁੰਡੇ = ਕੁੰਡੇ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ। ਅੰਕਸੁ = (ਹਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਕੁੰਡਾ। ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈਗੋ = ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Prof. Sahib Singh(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਭਟਕਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਚਲਤੌ ਚਲੈ ਚਲੈ = ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ = ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ। ਦਿਸਿ = ਪਾਸਾ। ਰਾਖੈ = ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ। ਲਿਵ = ਲਗਨ। ਲਾਵੈਗੋ = ਲਾਵੈ, ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Prof. Sahib Singhਲੋਭ-ਕੁੱਤਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਵਿਚ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕੱਢ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਸੁਆਨੁ = ਕੁੱਤਾ। ਨਗਰ = ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ। ਸਬਲਾ = (ਸ-ਬਲ) ਬਲ ਵਾਲਾ। ਮਾਰਿ = ਮਾਰਿ ਕੇ।

Prof. Sahib Singh(ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਧਰਮ (ਇਹ ਗੁਣ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ-ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਰੱਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਲੋਭ-ਕੁੱਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਆਨਿ = ਲਿਆ ਕੇ। ਹਰਿ ਨਗਰੀ = ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ॥੩॥

Prof. Sahib Singhਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਗਰੀਬੀ ਮੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਦੀਨੀ = (ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਕਰਿ = ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਦਾਲਦੁ = ਗਰੀਬੀ। ਭੰਜਿ = ਤੋੜ ਕੇ, ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਮੁਕਾ ਕੇ ॥੮॥੫॥
