Sant Singh KhalsaThe mind is the elephant, the Guru is the elephant-driver, and knowledge is the whip. Wherever the Guru drives the mind, it goes.
Manmohan SinghThe mind is the elephant, the Guru the elephant-driver, gnosis the goad. Whithersoever the Guru drives, thither goes the mind.
Manmohan Singh (Punjabi)ਮਨ ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਵਤ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਬੋਧ ਅੰਕਸ, ਜਿਥੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਥੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Fareedkot Teekaਮਨ (ਕੁੰਚਰੁ) ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਪੀਲਕੁ) ਹਾਥੀਵਾਨ ਹੈ, ਗਿਆਨ (ਕੁੰਡਾ) ਅੰਕਸ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਕਸ ਸੇ ਜਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਖੀਂਚਤਾ ਹੈ ਤਹਾਂ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿਤਾ ਹੈ॥
Prof. Sahib Singhਮਨ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ; (ਜੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਮਹਾਵਤ (ਬਣੇ, ਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਕੁੰਡਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਓਧਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਧਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ = ਹਾਥੀ। ਪੀਲਕੁ = ਹਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਮਹਾਵਤ। ਗਿਆਨ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ। ਜਹ = ਜਿਧਰ।

Manmohan Singh (Punjabi)ਨਾਨਕ, ਅੰਕੁਸ਼ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹਾਥੀ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ, ਉਜਾੜ ਬੀਆਬਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
Fareedkot Teekaਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਹਤੇ ਹੈਂ: ਜੋ ਮਨ ਰੂਪ ਹਾਥੀ ਅੰਕਸ ਸੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਹੈ ਵਹੁ (ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ) ਬਾਰੰਬਾਰ (ਉਝੜਿ) ਕੁਰਸਤੇ ਮੇਂ ਪੜਤਾ ਹੈ ਵਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਰੂਪ ਉਜਾੜ ਮੇਂ ਪੜਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭਾਵ ਇਹ ਕਿ ਨਿਗੁਰਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕੇ ਚਕਰ ਮੇਂ ਪੜਾ ਰਹਿਤਾ ਹੈ॥੨॥
Prof. Sahib Singhਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੁੰਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਾਥੀ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ = ਹਾਥੀ। ਉਝੜਿ = ਕੁਰਾਹੇ, ਔਝੜੇ। ਪਾਇ = ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
