Sant Singh KhalsaThe ignorant people who go to the desert to conquer their minds, are not able to conquer them.

Manmohan Singh (Punjabi)ਬੇਸਮਝ ਬੰਦੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮਾਰੂਥਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ।
Fareedkot Teekaਮਾਰੂ ਰਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਹਤੇ ਹੈਂ: ਵਾ ਮਾਰੂ ਸਥਲ ਮੇਂ ਜੋ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਨੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗਏ ਹੈਂ, ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇ॥
Prof. Sahib Singhਜੋ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਹਰ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗਏ ਉਹ ਮਾਰ ਨ ਸਕੇ;
ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਮਾਰੂ = ਮਾਰੂਥਲੇ ਵਿਚ, ਭਾਵ, ਜੰਗਲ ਬੀਆਬਾਨ ਵਿਚ।

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰੀਐ; ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
naanak je ihu maareeai; gurasabadee veechaar |
Sant Singh KhalsaO Nanak, if this mind is to be conquered, one must contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

Manmohan Singh (Punjabi)ਨਾਨਕ, ਜੇਕਰ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚਣਾ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Fareedkot Teekaਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਹਤੇ ਹੈਂ: ਜੋ ਗੁਰੋਂ ਕੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਕਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਮਾਰੀਤਾ ਹੈ॥
Prof. Sahib Singhਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,

Sant Singh KhalsaThis mind is not conquered by conquering it, even though everyone longs to do so.
Manmohan SinghBy subduing this mind is subdued not, even though everyone may so desire.
Manmohan Singh (Punjabi)ਵਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨੂਆ ਵਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਹਰ ਜਣਾ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਿਆ ਚਾਹੇ।
Fareedkot Teekaਬਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਏਹ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੂਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਤਾ, ਜੇ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਚਾਹੇ॥
Prof. Sahib Singh(ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਂਞ) ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਤਨੀ ਹੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰੇ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ = ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ।

Fareedkot Teekaਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਹਤੇ ਹੈਂ: (ਮਨੁ) ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਵਾ ਸੁਖ ਮਨ ਮਲਨ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਰਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰੋਂ ਮੇਂ ਲਿਖਾ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੇਸ਼੍ਟੀ ਮਿਲੇ॥੨॥
Prof. Sahib Singhਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਲ ਪਰਤਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
ਪਦ ਅਰਥ ਭੇਟੈ = ਮਿਲ ਪਏ। ਸੋਇ = ਉਹ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਮਰੱਥ) ॥੨॥
